...as time goes by

So, I know we're into the full swing of Fall, but I'm just now getting around to my "Back to School" pictures!

Halle is 6, and is in 1st grade

Kati is 8, and is in 3rd grade

When I took this picture (August 15), they had recently got their hair cut... 8 inches off of each of them. We sent their locks into a place that will take less than 10 inches.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

I was hooked on this book from the very beginning; but toward the end, I began to ask myself what was it that made this such a draw for me. It wasn't the author's writing style, which is okay but not spectacular; it wasn't the "murder mystery" type of plot, which was good, but not amazing, but I was captivated by the true human emotion developed through each character. These characters were alive - everything about them, good and bad. The characters individuality and emotions - pain, confusion, regret, finding their own happiness seemed therapeutic in a way to me.

The Lovely Bones is the story of a young girl who is raped and murdered in her neighborhood in the early 1970's. She narrates this story from her "inbetween" which is her version of heaven. Susie not only learns about herself, but about others, as she notices how their own versions of their heavens overlap with hers, and how they all interact. She watches over her family as they unravel after the tragic event of her death, and how each person copes in their own individual ways.

I was a disappointed in the last 30 pages; throughout the book there was a lot of overture and miniature climatic points, but toward the end I kept hoping and waiting for more... resolution, more retribution, more conclusion.

I gave this 4 stars, but only because we have whole numbers only... to me this should have 3.5+, but not quite a 4.
